Williams Fractals and Support/Resistance Levels

Using Williams Fractals for precise entry and stop-loss placement. Key component of the Katana system.

Williams Fractals are one of the simplest yet most effective tools for identifying key price levels. Developed by Bill Williams, they automatically mark local highs and lows on your chart, providing natural support and resistance levels for trade planning.

What Are Fractals?

A fractal is a pattern of at least 5 bars where the middle bar has the highest high (up-fractal) or lowest low (down-fractal) compared to the two bars on either side. They represent points where price reversed, indicating levels of significance.

Up-Fractal (Resistance)

The middle bar's high is higher than the highs of the two bars before and after it. This marks a local resistance level โ€” a price where sellers previously overwhelmed buyers.

Down-Fractal (Support)

The middle bar's low is lower than the lows of the two bars before and after it. This marks a local support level โ€” a price where buyers previously overwhelmed sellers.

Using Fractals in Trading

As Entry Levels

In the Katana system, fractals provide exact entry prices. After MA crossover + AO confirmation, you place a pending order at the nearest fractal in the trade direction. This ensures you enter only when price demonstrates enough momentum to break through a significant level.

As Stop-Loss Levels

The opposite fractal provides a logical stop-loss placement. For buy trades, the stop goes below the nearest down-fractal. For sells, above the nearest up-fractal. This gives your trade room to breathe while having a clear invalidation point.

As Support/Resistance Zones

Multiple fractals at similar price levels create zones of significance. The more fractals cluster at a price, the stronger that level is likely to be as support or resistance.

Practical Tips

Conclusion

Williams Fractals provide the precision layer in the Katana system. While MA crossovers give direction and AO confirms momentum, fractals tell you exactly WHERE to enter and WHERE to place your stop. This precision is what transforms a general idea into a specific, executable trade plan.
